Futurity bird list posted

The entry deadline has passed and we have entered the birds into WinSpeed and posted the bird list for everyone to see. We will update the list as it changes. If you see any errors/typos, please contact me so I can make the needed correction.

Our handlers, Bob Zerkle (46 birds) and John James (34 birds), are reporting that all but the youngest of birds are out and loft flying. As we begin training, we will start posting more frequent updates.

We have some great looking birds from some very good flyers around the state and country. We want to thank everyone for sending birds and we look forward to an exciting race series this fall.

No LRPC racing this weekend (May 7)

Due to a lack of participants and risky weather, the LRPC will not be racing this weekend. Please refer to our schedule for the upcoming weeks. The LRPC is not due to race again as a club until June 18. Anyone wanting to race before then will be doing so with the Frankfort (Bluegrass) club. If anyone is interested in visiting the Bluegrass club, please contact me.

Don’t forget to deliver you futurity birds if you have any! Deadline is only three weeks away. Also, I will be meeting Dustin Baker on Sunday, May 15, and we will exchange futurity birds. If you have any birds you would like to enter in the MVS Futurity or the Buckeye Challenge One Loft, please contact David soon.

Old Bird season trying to take off

homing pigeon

This 14-year-old gent came to me as a found bird near Morehead this week. He's a great-looking bird and will find a girlfriend waiting for him in Bob's loft before making a visit to David's loft later in the year.

We had a nice meeting at John James’ house Friday. Many thanks to John and his wife Whitney who prepared a table-full of goodies which we all enjoyed. It was nice to see Tony there as well and his birds and loft appear to be progressing well! Bob, once again, was able to enlighten us on some pigeon lore (who knew a pigeon’s altimeter couldn’t work over open water?) and some medication advice.

We had one guest, George Bryant from Lexington, and we did our best not to scare him away! Unfortunately, bad weather may have kept some of our other guests from making it and cut the meeting a bit short. As we departed John’s, we headed straight into the approaching squall line and threat of tornadoes – very unnerving!

I had three guests at my loft Friday before the meeting: Nathan Briggs and his brother Peter and a college friend of Nathan’s. They are trying to finish up their loft in the coming weeks and they will be ready for birds soon. They seemed to enjoy watching my birds fly around the neighborhood and they got to see the different stages of babies in the nest. I wish them well in their efforts. So far, they have built their small 4 x 4 loft entirely with recycled and scavenged material. They may be looking for some metal roofing material, 2×2′s and 1×4′s if anyone has any to give them. We will also looking for some members to donate some squeakers to them sometime in May.

If you still want to come visit John’s lofts and meet some club members, we have another shot at it this coming Friday evening, April 29. The long range forecast looks favorable! We will attempt a 100-mile race from Oneida on Saturday and I will drive the birds.

Weather has been a big issue for those of us trying to train birds and the first two races of the season have now been pushed back for us and the Frankfort club. I hope to hear soon about the Louisville’s club plans regarding their schedule and how it may affect ours. When I hear anything I will post an update. I am quite sure that the current OB schedule will be changing.

Futurity update: We are still getting birds in for the futurity and in fact, three good looking birds arrived yesterday from Thunderbird Lofts (Joel Sampang) from Texas. I’m hearing from many others that their birds will be ready soon so I expect another influx of birds in the coming weeks.
